What is gin?
Gin is a liquor made mainly from corn, rye or barley. If this drink is known for one thing, it’s for being the base of hundreds of cocktails. Gin is a classy, elegant drink that is always good to have on hand at home, whether for your own use or for get-togethers with friends or family.
What are spirits?
“Spirits” are understood to be drinks that have undergone a distillation process from wine or some other fermented fruit or plant. The alcohol content of these drinks is higher than that of beer and wine. This alcoholic liquid is designed for human consumption, with minimum concentrations of 15% ABV.
Although you might not have heard this term much, many alcoholic beverages that we consume are considered spirits. For example:
- Rum
- Vodka
- Whisky
- Brandy
- Gin
- Cognac
- Aguardiente
From Their Origins
It was in the 15th century that spirits started to be drunk more for enjoyment than for medicinal purposes. As the years went by, the most popular drinks of that time were traded internationally. There were drinks that could withstand long boat trips and whose properties improved over time. Perhaps this was the reason behind the discovery that wooden barrels were great for preserving and transporting these beverages.
