Patxaran. Alcoholic drinks.

Description

Patxaran. Alcoholic drinks.

Patxaran is a very well-known drink. It comes from the Basque Country and is usually consumed at the end of a meal as a digestif. If there is one thing that makes it special, it is its sweet taste. It has a high alcohol content, so it’s best to consume it in small amounts.

How to drink it

It is recommended to serve patxaran between 3 and 7 degrees C (37-45 degrees F) in a glass or tumbler. Its consumption is recommended after lunch or dinner.

This is also a liqueur that must be consumed within a period of 3 years. Unlike other liqueurs, this one does not withstand the passage of time very well.

What are spirits?

Spirits” are understood to be drinks that have undergone a distillation process from wine or some other fermented fruit or plant. The alcohol content of these drinks is higher than that of beer and wine. This alcoholic liquid is designed for human consumption, with minimum concentrations of 15% ABV.

Although you might not have heard this term much, many alcoholic beverages that we consume are considered spirits. For example:

  • Rum
  • Vodka
  • Whisky
  • Brandy
  • Gin
  • Cognac
  • Aguardiente

From Their Origins

It was in the 15th century that spirits started to be drunk more for enjoyment than for medicinal purposes. As the years went by, the most popular drinks of that time were traded internationally. There were drinks that could withstand long boat trips and whose properties improved over time. Perhaps this was the reason behind the discovery that wooden barrels were great for preserving and transporting these beverages.
