What are spirits?
“Spirits” are understood to be drinks that have undergone a distillation process from wine or some other fermented fruit or plant. From Their Origins
It was in the 15th century that spirits started to be drunk more for enjoyment than for medicinal purposes. As the years went by, the most popular drinks of that time were traded internationally. There were drinks that could withstand long boat trips and whose properties improved over time. Perhaps this was the reason behind the discovery that wooden barrels were great for preserving and transporting these beverages.
