Vodka

Description

Vodka – Spirit Drinks.

Vodka has a Russian, Polish and Slovenian origin. It is a distilled drink, one of the most popular in the whole world. It is made with water and ethanol and a few condiments. Normally, it is produced through the fermentation of grains and other plants that contain rye, starch, wheat…. The alcohol graduation of vodka ranges between 30 and 50% by volume.

Vodka was called “Water of life”, which in Russian is “zhiznennia voda” and its diminutive became the word “Vodca” which means “Small Water” in a tender way, a word that was used from the seventeenth century.

An interesting fact about vodka is that, smeared on the body, it prevents from freezing, putting yourself immediately protected from heat.

What are spirits?

Spirits” are understood to be drinks that have undergone a distillation process from wine or some other fermented fruit or plant. The alcohol content of these drinks is higher than that of beer and wine. This alcoholic liquid is designed for human consumption, with minimum concentrations of 15% ABV.

Although you might not have heard this term much, many alcoholic beverages that we consume are considered spirits. For example:

  • Rum
  • Vodka
  • Whisky
  • Brandy
  • Gin
  • Cognac
  • Aguardiente

From Their Origins

It was in the 15th century that spirits started to be drunk more for enjoyment than for medicinal purposes. As the years went by, the most popular drinks of that time were traded internationally. There were drinks that could withstand long boat trips and whose properties improved over time. Perhaps this was the reason behind the discovery that wooden barrels were great for preserving and transporting these beverages.
